In 1998 the Hastings Swimming Charitable Trust was formed and approached the Hastings District Council to manage two pool facilities; the Aquatic outdoor pool facility in Frimley Rd, Hastings and the Waterworld Indoor pool facility at Flaxmere.
The trust, now trading as Swim Heretaunga was initiated by Russell Collins and Pat Benson. The name Heretaunga was chosen in acknowledgement of a proud Hastings swim club tradition stretching back 70 years. The vision for the use of the Waterworld indoor pool was based around greater use from groups concerned with "all things swimming". The initial focus was to establish an excellent swim school and build a school swim programme.
Now after a decade the strength of the swim school is seen with over 600 lessons being taught each week, approx 2500 school children per year from local schools being taught swimming.
